All About Church and Worship for Children
Why do we go to church?
……..because God commanded us to do so
……..to honor and worship God
……..to study God’s word
……..to share time with other Christians
……..to spread God’s love
……..to serve with our gifts and talents
What is worship?
Worship is a joyful response to the presence and blessings of God.
Worship is about showing God our love and respect.
Worship is why we go to church.
During worship, we open our hearts and minds to God’s presence and allow Him to speak to us.
It is important to be good listeners during worship.
When we arrive for worship, we come quietly.
A quiet way of saying “hello” is to smile or nod.
We listen to the organ music or pray silently.
This is not a talking time.
What do we SEE in church?
The Sanctuary is where the people gather for worship.
It is like being in God’s house.
We come to praise God and to be together with our church family.
We treat God’s house with respect.
There are special ways of walking and talking.
We do not run or kick the pews.
We do not talk loudly.
We do not make loud noises with the papers or books.
We try not to disturb others.

We are the church collage You will need one for each child: We are the Church picture, piece of paper exactly 5 ¼” x 4 ¼” and an 8 ½ x 11 construction paper. Also…..magazines, scissors, and glue sticks. Have child find pictures of people (all ages!) in magazines to glue onto the small piece of paper. Cut open the doors along the dotted line and fold back. Put some glue along the front edges of the collage and attach to the door opening so that the faces show through. Glue the church onto the construction paper.
Build a church with blocks and ask your child, What would happen if we took this block out of our church? It would fall down….Each block is important. The blocks represent the people of the church. What would happen if someone was missing?
Here's the Church finger play
Fold hands together so that fingers are hidden inside, with thumbs pressed together and pointing straight up: Here is the church
Raise index fingers and put tips together to form a tall triangle: Here is the steeple!
Separate thumbs: Open the doors
Turn figure 'inside out' to reveal ten fingers interlaced and wriggling:
And there's all the people!
